About Ming

I am a Principal Interaction Designer based in London, with over 20 years of experience in UX design and design leadership. My career has spanned across London and Hong Kong, where I've honed my skills in UX design, web development, and product management. With a strong technical background, I excel in bridging the gap between design and development, ensuring that both usability and aesthetics are seamlessly integrated.

As a designer

My expertise lies in crafting user-centred and accessible services, with a strong emphasis on agile, collaborative methodologies. I have led design initiatives across diverse sectors, including public services, banking, eCommerce, ad tech, and telecommunications. I am proficient in Interaction Design, Visual Design, Photography, Typography, and Front-end development, which allows me to create holistic, cohesive solutions.

I am comfortable in industry-standard design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and Miro, and possess a solid foundation in web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WordPress, Node.js, and Git & GitHub.

As a leader

In addition to my design expertise, I’m deeply passionate about mentoring and building high-performing design teams, developing robust design systems, and facilitating collaborative workshops. I believe that design is a team sport, and collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams is at the heart of my design philosophy. As a leader, my focus is on enabling and empowering others, rather than enforcing rigid management styles. My leadership approach is grounded in empathy, accessibility, and strategic thinking, always striving to foster an environment where impactful, user-friendly solutions can thrive.

As an adventurer

You may wonder how I suddenly ended up in London. The truth is, while I was thoroughly enjoying my time working with an incredibly talented team at Yahoo! Hong Kong, I often felt a bit envious and even self-conscious around my colleagues. Many of them had studied or lived abroad—an experience that, for financial reasons, had always seemed out of reach for me and my family. But my drive for personal growth (and wanting to be as skilled as my colleagues) pushed me to start looking for an affordable way to live abroad.

That’s when I discovered the Youth Mobility Scheme visa, also known as the working holiday visa. This visa was issued to people aged 18 to 30, allowing them to live and work in the UK for 2 years with relatively few restrictions. However, I was about to turn 31, so this was likely my last chance to make it happen.

Moving to a country where I didn’t have a job, a place to stay, or friends to rely on felt like a huge risk—especially when I was happy in my career. But I decided it was something worth doing, regardless of the outcome. The worst-case scenario would be losing my savings and returning to Hong Kong. So, I left my job and set off, aiming to survive for a year.

And here I am, 15 years later, with an incredibly rewarding journey behind me and still going strong. I don’t know if I’ll stay here forever, or perhaps move again one day. But what I do know is that life hasn’t disappointed me yet.

My languages

My first language is Cantonese Chinese, and my Mandarin Chinese is proficient. I have been living in London for 15 years and frequently run meetings, so I have no issues communicating in English. Additionally, I am also a learner in Japanese and I hope I will be proficient enough one day.
